Worship and Freddie Mercury

One little known fact about me is that I’m a movie buff. I’m not a movie buff in the sense that I can quote random factoids or name every actor in a certain movie. I may not know what film won the academy award for best picture which year, or know the history of a certain genre; But, I’m the type of movie buff who is drawn to any good story. I will watch any genre, and I will find the deeper themes and chew on them for hours, days, weeks and even years. I will return to films and process new concepts over and over. I will connect them to my life, and even more often, to my faith.

Tonight I saw “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Now, I am a Christian, but this is not a Christian review of the movie. I’m not going to tell you how family friendly it is, or what the content is, because there are a million other websites out there to tell you that. Instead, I want to use it as a starting point for a discussion about worship.

Worship you say? From a movie about the life of Freddie Mercury? How do you get that?
(there aren’t really any spoilers here, so feel free to read on even if you’ve not seen the film)

Towards the end of the movie, there is a long portion capturing Queen’s performance at Live Aid in 1985. In the scene, they are playing to thousands and thousands of people in person and on television. While watching it, I felt something rise in my chest. A deep, aching feeling of passion. Tears came to my eyes, though the scene wasn’t necessarily sad. I sat back and thought about the emotions that were being evoked in that moment. It was a feeling I have felt many times before, but not typically in this environment.

The feeling I felt was the same as I feel on a Sunday morning, eyes closed, worshipping Jesus while surrounded by my family (my church). The feeling was one of worship. In the movie, there were thousands of people steeped in an atmosphere of worship.

Now, we can debate on the object of worship in the film. Was it a man? An idea? Music?
I don’t really care to answer that, but rather, I would like to explore the call to worship that exists deep in the soul of every human. A call that must be answered, and when devoid of an adequate connection to the divine, tends to pour out into worship of other things, people, or concepts.

I believe in the nucleus of worship itself, God has placed the desire for connection. Worship, in it’s truest form is connection with the divine, while also connecting with the divine in those around us. It is community. It is souls joined together in mutual admiration of truth, in deep reverence for, and passion towards that which is greater than us.

Recently, in worship at church, this is the very thing God has been showing me. Many times I’ve found myself more in awe of the family around me than God while worshiping. At first I thought this was a bad thing, a sign that my focus was off. But, Jesus began to speak to me about the fact that He was revealing His heart to me. His heart for His people. My reveling in the community around me was still part of my worship of the Lord. I could feel Him and see Him in the faces to the right and left of me. Seeing faces in rapturous wonder, others with tears streaking down their skin, and still others in tight embrace, many speaking truth over another brother or sister. How could this not be worship? How could enjoying the presence of the Lord in the family around me not be the deepest heart of worship?

So, what is my point besides a meandering exploration of a fascinating spiritual concept? Well, it is simply to share that it is so much more than a concept. If we do not grasp the heart of worship, we will lose the opportunity to love others fully, and introduce them to the one who can love them best.

Worship opportunities lie all around us. Have you ever been to a sporting event? You’ve seen worship at work. Mutual admiration. Comradery. Exclamations of praise and passion. At atmosphere of worship permeates a stadium. Art shows. Concerts. Rallies. Worship opportunities lie outside of the church, and many times they are backed with much more passion and zeal than the church can begin to emulate.

If we cannot grasp the heart of worship as a people of Christ, how can we begin to ask others to worship with us? And, it is our hearts, open and vulnerable to those around us that opens an atmosphere of worship in a place. It is not standing in straight rows singing the same songs. Any children’s choir can do that. It is not perfectly tuned instruments and voices, with choreographed dance moves or facial expressions. It is open hearts. It is seeing the other. It is loving the person to your right, feeling gratitude well up for the person on your left. It is laying disagreements at the door and entering in to a family, and laying your heart bare for anyone to see.

That is worship. Caring more about the divine before you, than the dirt you’ve left behind you. It is recognizing that divine fingerprint in those you see. It is embracing love to the fullest degree.
So church, go worship today.

Arborvitae Breakdown

Arborvitae
Thuja plicata

Arborvitae is a relatively unknown oil and that's truly a shame. It is a powerhouse oil that address viral, bacterial and fungal needs. Preventing the decay of the tree when it dies, this oil is derived from the sawdust cast off from the wood processing, making it both powerful for our bodies and the environment.

Description:
Known as the “tree of life,” Arborvitae is majestic in size and abundant in unique benefits. Our arborvitae essential oil is sourced from the heartwood of the Thuja plicata tree. It is also known as Western Red Cedar and is native to North America (primarily Canada and the Northwestern United States). This unique source of arborvitae essential oil contains a distinct chemical profile and is uniquely concentrated in methyl thujate. The sourcing arrangements for this oil are done in an innovative, environmentally-responsible way through distillation of residual wood materials to ensure no trees are unnecessarily harvested for production. Native to Canada, all parts of the Arborvitae tree were used extensively by Native Americans for health benefits and for building vessels, totem poles, baskets, and clothing. Because of its natural preserving properties, Arborvitae prevents wood from rotting, which makes it popular in woodcraft and for preserving natural wood surfaces.

Directions for Use:
Diffusion: Use three to four drops in the diffuser of your choice.
Topical use: Apply one to two drops to desired area. Dilute with doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil to minimize any skin sensitivity.

What is your launch trajectory?

Most of us have heard the platitude about an arrow being pulled back before it can go forward, as an illustration for managing the tough things in life. But I want to extend this. Not only does an arrow have to be pulled back, but the chord holding the arrow must be pulled taught. It strains and tightens, building up great energy. Then,  when that arrow is released,  it plows ahead with terrific force.

I believe that the things in life that cause tension and strain,  also cause great momentum when that tension is released and returned to a normal state.  The direction of that momentum however,  is up to the archer and the direction the arrow is facing. Will it plow into the dirt, or will it soar directly at the target?

When we face tough times we have a choice.  We can continue to zero in on our trajectory, even if for that season we don't make any forward progress.  We can continue realigning and focusing on the end goal all as the tension and difficulty grows and grows.

We can live in depression,  feel sorry for ourselves,  blame others for everything going wrong. We can mourn our lot in life and lament that others don't deal with this stuff (spoiler alert: your struggle isn't unique and you give it way more power when you pretend it is. Others have overcome similar, and wisdom can be found when we don't push others away ). Then when tension is over,  you'll plow right into the dirt. The place you've been aiming for all along.  And you'll be picking emotional, financial, mental and spiritual mud out of your hair for a long time.

We can live in distraction. Ignore the situation and live for momentary pleasure. We can pursue numbing agents to ignore the current reality.  And then when that tension is released we'll head in any direction but forward.  Off course, far from where we want to be,  and spending a long time finding ourselves.

Or, we can remind ourselves of the truth. We can surround ourselves with mentors that will counsel and encourage us. We can focus on self development, time with God, time with community. We can live open hearted and focused on our promises. And then, when that tension is released,  we will fly straight at our goals. The stress of life will propel us directly towards the best things in life.  Our trauma will become our testimony,  and our stress our speed at which we race towards the promises.

Where is your arrow pointed today?

Trust, Poetry and Some Rutabega

What does rutabaga and trust have in common you ask? In a small silly way, they both illustrate the growth that this last year has brought.

Once every few weeks this year I've had a dawning realization of some of the drastic changes happening in me... both physically and emotionally. This month marks a year. A year out of my house that was filled with mold. A year since the phone conversation where my husband revealed he had returned to his addiction... in the most extreme way. A year since I found out my already touch and go marriage was officially over. A year since I had to come to terms with the fact I would lose 95% of my earthly possessions to mold. A year since the peak of the mold illness that threatened my life...

This past year has been a journey back towards normalcy in many ways. But, the path back is much different now because I am different. Now I am clothed with the breakthroughs and strength only acquired through strain and trauma and the recurring choice to remain faithful or grow bitter.

As I walk this path, I've hit familiar road markers. Places I used to know before years of illness and betrayal tried to break me.
The physical changes began happening immediately, but the emotional and mental changes were more subtle.

The first thing that came back to me was a love of music. Something I feel I'd shut away because of the emotional impact it would have. I had shut down healthy emotions to survive. After my ex first broke my trust years ago, music became painful.

Then,  a love of art. I threw myself into creating... even though it wasn't all that good,  it was an expression of me. Something I used to do for fun.  I hadn't had much time for fun when I spent all my time plugging holes in the boat called "family".

Then poetry. If you want to understand my emotional journey this past year, look no further than the poems posted on my blog. I don't purport to be a great poet, I'm sure my college creative writing teacher would cringe; but, the overflow of my heart tends to be best expressed in words.

Next came a recognition of my beauty. Now that may sound prideful,  but I don't mean it to.  I had hated my physical form for years. Blaming my "attractiveness" or lack thereof as one reason my ex chose to pursue what he did. But, as I was removed from that toxic environment I slowly began to appreciate my feminine form again. To dress it in ways that made me feel beautiful. And to take compliments and actually believe them.

Then,  I entered a new relationship. And, challenges quickly ensued. Not externally. My boyfriend and I connect and have a level of chemistry and communication that I had no idea was possible.  But... I had so many internal records on repeat in my head that i had to learn to turn off. And just about every one centered on my ability to trust.

As I kept bringing this to the Lord and he led me through, step by step,  my internal lies stilled. The day I realized I was fully trusting my boyfriend,  it was like a light illuminated my whole life.  Because it wasn't just trusting Nathan, it was trusting God. It was trusting the good things he had for me. It was trusting that my life could be better than the things I'd lost.

Tonight, I hit another marker.  A signpost named,  "love of cooking". Cooking was always one of those things I did because I loved it, and the more depressed I was,  the less I cooked. Tonight it was rutabega and baked crusted cod. (I told you Rutabega fit in)

I am fighting a head cold,  I'm under more external stress this week than I've faced in months... but still I slowed down enough to make a meal that took a great deal of time,  energy,  creativity and love.

So, it may be small. But it is meaningful. It reminds me that I'm living in an outward expression of joy I haven't felt for a decade.
Maybe all of these changes are small. Maybe they seem insignificant to some.  But as I look at the path I've traveled this past year, I hardly recognize the traveler that began the journey.

There are still sign posts to pass. I know vaguely of areas I haven't seen and felt in decades... but I know deep in my heart that they are coming. I'm walking hand in hand with Jesus, observing the beauty along the way. Marveling in his goodness and faithfulness. And enjoying some delicious home cooked meals as I go. Rutabega anyone?

Student

Her fingers lightly press
Dancing through cords she knows
And notes she doesn’t
Her grasp of music is weak
But her heart is moved

As she dances across the keys
The discordant tune matches
The pangs of confusion
Of a reality that never will
Align with her memories

Her eyes clenched tight
She feels the movement
Rhythm of a life she remembers
And realizes she never knew
But swore she had under control

Sharps clash with flats
And chords follow no sheet
Some notes sweet but most foul
Like the life that fell off the page
And took a route unplanned

The tighter she closes
The more tears flow
She feels the pain of loss
And more of playing the fool
She loved too hard and too long

With eyes still closed
And tears not yet dry
Her fingers wander
Finding a true melody
Amongst the same notes

She is still a student
But she falters less today
Yesterday’s tune still hangs in the air
But today’s melody crescendos
Resounding steady in her soul

What NOT to say to a woman going through a divorce

So ya'll know by now I'm a candid person. But, sometimes I hold back some things I want to say for fear of "perception". Once in a while these things stick around long enough that I finally get over that fear and share. This is one of those things.

Today I had to do something frightening and vaguely traumatizing. While experiencing it I had a well meaning, sweet Christian lady ask me, "so do you think there is no opportunity for reconciliation with your husband?" (said in a way that really meant, "I think you should consider reconciling)

phew.... where to begin...

Here's the thing I want to begin with... I know she was so well meaning. I know she was legitimately concerned and valuing marriage the best way she knew. I know that divorce is so extremely hurtful, and is never God's first choice (and if you haven't picked that up from my posts let's talk in person shall we).

But, that question stung. It didn't feel healthy. Here's why...

Firstly, this was not the first time I've been asked something similar. It actually is THE MOST common comment that is made when it is discovered i'm going through divorce (in the Christian community at least). And every time it comes up it feels like a knife in my gut.

I think this question is more hurtful than helpful...

Before you burn me at the stake with "don't you value marriage?!" and "don't you know how rampant divorce is?!" questions and comments... hear me out.

I have never been more pro marriage and more anti-divorce than I am at this moment. I value the covenant of marriage in a way that I never could have fathomed before now. I believe divorce is a scourge on society, and the breaks in the family unit all over the US breaks my heart. But, I am still a statistic. I still ultimately chose to walk away from my damaging relationship. And because my marriage fell in that "scriptural exception" category, I am given a pass by most in the church.

So knowing all this... how could I ever have a problem with the question she asked me?

Ok, on to the point...

This question does nothing but stir up angst, without a healthy direction no matter my response.

Let's for a moment, play out some possibilities. Remember, this is a woman I do not know. I am not in community with her. She knows hardly the tip of the iceberg about my life...

So, her question, and other variations of it, basically say, "why don't you give this another shot?"

If I am in a truly damaging marriage situation (like I was), with scriptural/religious backing to leave my marriage, all this question does is stir up fear, shame, regret, remorse and all sorts of traumatic feelings. It is like asking a rape victim to regale you with details of their experience. I now feel required to give adequate justification as to the severeness of sin in our marriage that gives me the "right" to leave. It forces me on the defensive and re-exposes me to the details of my traumatic experience.

All of this happens so I feel that I can "justify" my actions before a perfect stranger.

Ya'll... this isn't ok.

If this was a member of my Christian community... someone who has been invested in my life and well-being before this conversation, someone who has connected with me on a heart level... at that point I think a question like that, born out of an understanding of my heart posture and details of the experience, is a totally fair question.

But, in that scenario, i'm not required to go through those details and justify myself. It is now a heart to heart connection, with exhortation and love at the core. It prioritizes me as a human being, before my marriage as an entity.

If, on the other hand, my divorce wasn't scripturally justified. If I was just being selfish and self serving... it still doesn't change anything. Unless you have been in communion and connection with me, unless you have a deep investment in me as a person, pushing me to stay in a marriage isn't going to be effective or healthy. It is the equivalent of the Christian on the street corner yelling "repent lest ye perish"... it is lacking all grace, and I would suggest it is lacking actual love as well. It is a fear based conversation, idolizing marriage at the expense of a human being and their unique need to feel loved and change from a spirit of love, not coercion. Ultimately, it is trying to cash in trust when you've not yet earned it.

Now, let's finish with what I think would be more helpful, and, what I'm NOT saying.

I feel that you can still value marriage highly, while also not overstepping bounds and potentially stirring up trauma or resentment. You don't have to be silent and stoic if your heart is hurting for a broken marriage. If someone I don't know said to me, "I am so sorry to hear that. That is such a tragedy. Do you have anyone you can talk to about that? Can I offer a listening ear if not?" I would be so incredibly thankful.
A comment like that one does two things: It acknowledges the devastation of divorce, while also recognizing that a proper discussion of a marriage and divorce happens within community and relationship. It allows for someone like me to share that I am receiving counsel, or it gives me a space to ask for help.

Lastly, what I'm NOT saying.

I am not saying that all Christians need to "shut it" and let people go on their merry way towards divorce. I'm saying, that we need to be more concerned with relationship, rather than idolizing any one element of a person's "right actions". We need to trust people to those who have spent time building relationships with them, or be willing to truly jump in the trenches with them... not just shout directions from our ivory tower.

I'm not saying that divorce is always ok. I'm saying the exact opposite. But, I'm saying that putting someone that you hardly know on the defense never is going to get the desired results... no matter how kindly you intended it. If you stand beside that person and ask how you can help, I guarantee you will be able to speak into their lives with much more grace and authority as that relationship blossoms.

This goes for many many arenas. Divorce is simply the one I'm witnessing in this season. Take the time to pursue relationship before correction, and watch the true power of heart to heart connection take place.

Agape

The mass is too great.  I strain and I strive with it's weight and expanse. But, small enough to carry in my pocket,  or slip in the crevices of my heart.

It is complex and manifold, greater than the expanse of the heavens. Yet,  the simplest of minds can grasp it in full.  Facile and bright.

The gravitas is severe, pressing with yawning, frightening,  intensity. But still light as a feather, tickling heart and mind with joy and flow.

I can plunge it's depths,  never to reach the bottom.  Fathomless ends. Yet I splash in it's shallows, face upturned, refreshing drops tracing my skin.

Simple Trust

Stolen.
The simple faith of the unfettered soul.
The rest and peace of the unblemished heart.
The security of the sincere, innocent girl.

Arose.
The retreat of the bloodied naivety
The fear of the volley and the violation
The doubt and insecurity of the wounded woman.

Trust.
So simple a thought and complex a reality
Did she really know it in the former?
Or, is greatest opportunity ripe in her hand?
